Artisan cheese is fantastic on its own, there’s no denying that. Whether you’re enjoying a small wedge or sharing a large cheese wheel, the flavour sensations you experience thanks to our traditional methods is unmatched.

However, just as cheese is best enjoyed with friends and family, it’s at its best when you have something delicious with it. From a lovely bottle of wine or port to delicious chutneys and biscuits, all made with the same love as our cheese, we do everything possible to enhance the experience.

All of our accompaniments are available in our cheese gift hampers, or can be ordered separately if you have something specific in mind.

What to Enjoy with Cheese

It’s a simple snack, but sometimes you just can’t beat cheese and crackers. The flavour and texture of the cheese is perfectly complemented by the crunch of some crackers, which have a slight flavour of their own but nothing overpowering.

We emulate that classic experience by partnering with Popti for our biscuits. These are more than just a platform to place your cheese on, they mix with it perfectly, giving you the old-school enjoyment of cheese and crackers but with the flavour turned up to 11.

Popti share our traditional values, using natural ingredients that create the best flavour. They have multiple types of biscuit available too, so you can choose which to add to our customisable hampers, or order them on their own.

If you really want to liven up the cheese-tasting experience all you need is a small dollop of chutney. Adding some sweetness to the savouriness of cheese and biscuits really does a lot, and our chutneys are some of the best.

Not everyone is a fan of the sweet and savoury combination, which we understand completely. That’s why we also have a range of pates, so you have another spreadable option, this time with earthy flavours and a smooth texture that complements our cheeses beautifully.

For something a little different, why not add some cured meats to your cheeseboard? These aren’t your everyday slices of ham, our traditional salami and chilli chorizo are bursting with flavour, enjoyable on their own but great alongside our artisan cheese.

Some say that bold cheeses shouldn’t have accompaniments. We say the opposite – every cheese deserves to have some delicious flavours alongside.

Why Cheese needs Accompaniments

We admit that ‘needs’ is a strong word; our cheese is absolutely fantastic on its own. However, for the best taste sensation, accompaniments are crucial.

Even the nicest cheese, with the boldest flavours, starts to taste a little ‘samey’ after a few slices in quick succession. This is because the creaminess of the cheese coats your tastebuds, or there isn’t a break in between so that each piece after the first doesn’t give the same ‘zing’ of flavour.

Palette Cleansers for Cheese

You’ve heard of palette cleansers before, something you eat or drink to refresh your tastebuds between meals. With cheese it’s no different. If you’re tasting multiple types of cheese, from crumbly stiltons to creamy Red Derby and Peakland Blue, you want each to stand on their own.

That’s why you have a nice glass of wine, port, or ale on the side. This is not only an additional treat; it cleans out your mouth ready for the next taste sensation. Wine and port especially can also enhance some flavours, which is why they’re a common sight at cheese tastings.

Speaking of which, our cheese is perfect for a cheese tasting evening, either a professional one for an event or some fun with loved ones. By having the right accompaniments, you can make it a much better experience, and our cheese will be showcased at its absolute best.

That’s because these accompaniments aren’t just for cleansing a palette, they’re so much more!

The Best Accompaniments for Cheese

A lot of cheese manufacturers include accompaniments in their cheese hampers, but they do so without much thought, instead adding them as just a bonus.

We understand that you want the best value for money, and a gift hamper or subscription box that contains more than just cheese feels great. But at Hartington we choose our accompaniments very carefully.

By using traditional methods when creating our cheese, we unlock flavours you won’t find on supermarket shelves. From the way we store our cheese to how we handle the curds in their vats; the entire process is an art form. If we just added a bottle of cheap wine and some off-the-shelf crackers to a hamper, we wouldn’t just be letting our customers down, we’d be letting ourselves down too.

That’s why we choose our alcoholic beverages carefully, so they complement your chosen cheese. The same is true for our range of chutneys. All are made with locally foraged ingredients, hand-picked so you only get the best.

We also partnered with other companies that share our values, such as Popti, whose biscuits are a fantastic addition to our hampers.

Whether you’re buying cheese for yourself or to share, you and your loved ones deserve only the best. We take great pride in our selection of accompaniments, so they match the quality of our cheese, and you get the most flavour for your money.
