We’re proud to create some of the best cheese in the UK. From our simplest white cheese to more bold flavours like chilli and chocolate cheese, and our award-winning blue cheese that never ceases to amaze, we have something that anyone can enjoy.

But to really make the most of your cheese, you need to have something with it. Although it’s fantastic as a solo performer, our cheese accompaniments are like the rest of the band. And to use the same analogy, our chutneys are like a world-class guitarist. The singer is the main attraction, but without that incredible guitar, it just wouldn’t be as good.

What is Chutney?

Chutney is a sweet or savoury condiment often paired with cheese. It is usually fruit-based, but some are made using vegetables as well. The consistency of chutney is usually smooth, and it has a similar thickness to jam.

We have two main types of chutney in our current range. The ones we all know and love are made by our friends at Fruits of the Forage, who use all-natural ingredients foraged and sourced from our local area. Their flavours are:

But we also recently introduced three of our own delicious chutneys to our Heart of Hartington range. These are made as exclusive recipes by our friends at Fruits of the Forage who share our small artisan ethos of sustainable natural food production.

Our New Chutney

We have created three brand-new chutneys, all designed to complement cheese perfectly. These flavours are:

Let’s give each a little time in the spotlight.

First, chilli jam. Most white cheese is smooth and creamy, so adding a little extra kick creates a taste sensation. But it’s not overpowering, even with a generous dollop! Best served alongside our Best Stilton or Squadron Cheddar truckle.

Red onion and plum chutney is a classic flavour combination. This is our most traditional style chutney; with a fruity tang thanks to the organic cider vinegar we add. Ideal as a flavour-enhancing gifting accompaniment to our Red Onion Truckle of Cheese.

Tomato and tamarind chutney blend the taste of home with something more exotic. Our home-grown British tomatoes are combined with a light sourness from the tamarind, which pairs well with both hard and creamy cheeses. Pair this with our Balti Spiced cheese or Chilli Derby cheese to enhance the flavours of both cheese and chutney.

All three of our new chutneys are available individually or as a bundle if you’re keen to try them all.

How to Pair Cheese with Chutney

There are no ‘wrong’ pairings when it comes to cheese and chutney, and the best combinations often come down to personal preference. But we’ll still mention some of our personal recommendations if you’re creating a cheese board for the first time.

There’s also a third element you need to consider. There’s nothing wrong with applying chutney directly to your cheese, but if the cheese is very crumbly or creamy, this just makes a mess.

If you’re a fan of less solid cheeses, add a cracker or biscuit to the mix. This isn’t just practical either, the crunchiness of a cracked pepper biscuit or cracker will complement other flavours.

A good rule to follow is this; the milder the cheese, the stronger the chutney and vice versa. If you pair strong flavour with strong flavour, it can be overwhelming as the two battle for supremacy on your tongue. Some people like this, but we find that it removes the ability to enjoy all flavours equally.

Again, it’s all down to personal preference. Simply pick a cheese you like, and one or two chutneys that have ingredients you like, or you want to try for the first time.

The Best Chutneys for your Cheese Board

A cheese board is the best way to enjoy multiple cheeses and accompaniments, and can be a fun treat for yourself and your loved ones.

However, with so many cheeses and chutneys in our store, your basket will quickly be bursting with everything you want to try. To ensure nothing goes to waste, it might be easier to pick up a hamper or sign up for our cheese subscription service instead.

With one of our cheese gift hampers, you’ll have all you need to create a cheese board straight away. Most include cheese, chutneys, biscuits, and something to wash it all down with.

But these aren’t fixed bundles. If there’s a certain something you’re desperate to try, you can make sure it’s added to your hamper. This allows you to pick your favourites, but at a lower price than it would be to buy them all individually.

Our cheese subscriptions give you less control, as they will be set in stone each time, and will be delivered monthly, or every 2/3 months. Its contents will be hand-picked by our team; with cheese and accompaniments we know you’ll love. If you’re a big fan of cheese, and aren’t too picky about certain flavours, this is a great way to get plenty of pleasant surprises delivered to your door.
