Hartington Creamery Honours VJ Day with New ‘Hartington Bomber’ Cheese
In a powerful tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the "Greatest Generation," Hartington Creamery has launched a new artisan cheddar, the Hartington Bomber. Timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) on August 15, this special-edition cheese honors the official end of World War II and the heroes who served in the Far East.
While many associate the end of the war with VE Day in May, a separate and equally significant victory was secured months later when Japan surrendered, bringing the global conflict to a close. The 'Hartington Bomber' is a respectful nod to this crucial moment in history, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought in Asia is not forgotten.
A Cheese with a Story
The 'Hartington Bomber' is more than just a cheese; it's a piece of history. This full-bodied cheddar has been carefully matured for at least 18 months, developing a strong, sharp flavor that is both complex and robust. Its deep, powerful taste and distinctive black wax rind are designed to symbolize the strength and resilience of the wartime generation it commemorates.
The name itself pays a specific homage to the RAF 617 "Dambusters" Squadron, a group of celebrated airmen who were based in the very region where our cheese is made. This squadron, famous for its daring missions, practiced its bombing raids in the local Derwent Valley—an enduring link between our Derbyshire roots and a pivotal piece of military history.
Honoring Local and Global Heritage
According to Robert Gosling, the Managing Director of Hartington Creamery, the creation of the cheese is a way to bridge the creamery's rich heritage with a momentous piece of local and global history.
"The cheese celebrates the creamery's heritage while also paying tribute to a significant moment in history and local heritage," says Gosling. "The cheese is a way to honor the courage of those who secured peace and the brave airmen who trained nearby."
The 'Hartington Bomber Cheese' is a symbol of our commitment to craftsmanship and our profound respect for history. It's an opportunity for our customers to enjoy a premium, locally-made product while reflecting on the sacrifices that shaped our world. The cheese is available in two sizes: a 200g waxed truckle and a substantial 2kg waxed wheel. It can be purchased directly from the Hartington Creamery online shop starting on August 15, aligning with the UK's national VJ Day commemorations.
